What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This leads to the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes deeper cysts or nodules. Acne can appear on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders – areas with a high concentration of oil glands.

Different Types of Acne

  1. Whiteheads (Closed Comedones)

Whiteheads are small, white bumps that form when pores become clogged with oil and skin cells. The pore remains closed, trapping the debris inside. They often appear as tiny, flesh-colored bumps on the skin.

  2. Blackheads (Open Comedones)

Blackheads are similar to whiteheads but have a wider opening on the skin's surface. The trapped debris oxidizes, giving it a black or dark appearance. They are commonly seen on the nose, chin, and forehead.

  3. Papules

Papules are small, red bumps that develop when hair follicles become inflamed. They may feel tender or sore to the touch and do not contain pus.

  4. Pustules

Pustules are similar to papules but contain pus at their tips. They appear as white or yellowish bumps surrounded by red, inflamed skin.

  5. Nodules

Nodules are large, solid, and painful lumps beneath the skin's surface. They result from the buildup of bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells deep within the pores.

  6. Cysts

Cysts are the most severe form of acne lesions. They are large, pus-filled lumps that are often painful to the touch. Cysts can cause scarring and may require medical intervention for treatment.
